Exporting of legumes from Canada to the European Union

In 2007, the exporting of legumes from Canada to the European Union (EU) increased to more than 200 million. Two-thirds of these exports went to the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Beans accounted for the largest share of exports, followed by lentils, peas and chickpeas.

According to a press release issued April 8 by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Canadian government is helping legume producers increase their productivity and gain access to new markets. Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz today announced that Pulse Canada will receive an investment up to $8.3 million for research, innovation and development of new markets to build an even more profitable and competitive legume industry.

"The Government of Canada is helping legume producers to succeed and take advantage of their great potential to reach markets the Canada and abroad, said Minister Ritz." These investments in science, innovation and strategic market development will help the legume industry, convince more consumers to opt in for legumes, and encourage more international buyers to acquire high quality Canadian legume crops."

The Government of Canada will support two projects:

•An amount of $7 million to help Pulse Canada conduct a research effort to be led by more than 100 scientists from industry, government and universities to develop ways to increase productivity and nutritional content, and to improve the benefits of crop rotation. This research will help generate innovative ways to transform and use legumes that will promote the creation of new market opportunities and net profits for Canadian legume producers.

•An amount of $1.3 million to support Pulse Canada in developing a targeted market development strategy to build and support legume applications everywhere in the world.

•"Research is the engine of innovation," says Gordon Bacon, President and CEO of Pulse Canada. As evidenced by this announcement, the industry-government partnership will act so that the legume industry remains competitive in terms of production, and that it continues to stimulate demand in many ways, namely by transforming legumes into various food applications. In addressing the problems of market access, this industry-government partnership will help seek out and maintain opportunities for Canadian exports.’’

Last year, Canada exported more than two billion dollars of legumes to over 150 countries. Canada exports approximately 75 per cent of its legume production, a volume that represents almost 40 per cent of global trade in these products. Please check) is funded through the agro-scientific legume initiative under the “Let’s Farm for the Future” banner. The Agro-flexible Fund is part of Canadian Economic Action Plan which supports agriculture as an important driving force of our country. The Government of Canada is dedicated to strengthening the economy while preparing to reduce the deficit and create and protect jobs in the future. The granting of financial assistance to these projects is subject to compliance with the conditions of admission and contribution agreements.
